At Fourpure, we take sustainability very seriously: it's part of our DNA, what we do. But we’ve had a challenge. You see, the cans in our core range – the ones we can do thousands of an hour, are infinitely recyclable, and that's because we print directly onto the aluminum.

Like all cans, they are easy to recycle, they weigh less and pack down to a smaller space meaning that transport costs and impact are lower. Our challenge, however, has been on small run batches. The cans are just fine to recycle, but, and it’s a big but, the labels that are produced for them are not very easily removed and therefore can not be separated after all the lovely beer is gone. They are required to be burnt off which uses more energy and creates more bi-products in the recycling process.

For the last six months, before we could commit permanently to any small-batch canning, we’ve been looking for labels that are easily recycled. We've undertaken a thorough process and recently we have had a breakthrough. Vanish material labels that we’ll soon be using require 27% less energy to remove, 17% less water and uses 12% less CO2 - quite startling statistics.

So, as well as reducing the amount of plastic on the cans, it means we are able to can our ever-expanding range of one-off and special run beers. And that is very exciting indeed.

Wanderlust is a super aromatic West Coast Pale that’s double-dry hopped with intense aromas of pine, resinous grapefruit & hoppy goodness. It was inspired by head brewer John’s recent trip to the hop farms of Yakima Valley where he had the opportunity to sample the goods from the source and drink plenty of fresh hop beers from local breweries. One of our best beers of the year (if that's your kind of thing) and well worth grabbing a crowler from the shop while stocks last.

A beautifully bright, deep golden coloured beer with fine bubbles, lively carbonation and great lacing topped by a tightly packed white head. The long maturation period has given this beer very clear, well-defined flavours and aromas.

The Vienna & Munich malts give this beer a real substantial malt backbone of bread & toast, which is slightly offset by the sharper flavour of the Pilsner malt. The Tettnang hop imparts a great classically noble, delicately spicy flavour that gives this beer more complexity than the traditional German interpretations. Overall Oktoberfest 2017 is a rich, malty lager with bright hoppy notes.

When we asked our employees which beer style that we haven’t brewed yet they most wanted us to brew, Milk Stout was hands down the most popular answer. Interestingly, they also suggested lots of interesting variations on the style. We really liked the idea of a Salted Carmel Milk Stout – so we made one. A carefully selected blend of malts creates the pronounced caramel flavour, which is augmented by the addition of natural sea salt during the beer’s tank conditioning.

Many of the most exciting modern hop varieties exhibit interesting tropical fruit flavours, which is why we decided to make this bold IPA that’s absolutely bursting with passionfruit. We combined four different malts to create a clean, simple backdrop for our good old friends Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic to do their thing – giving this beer an explosive hop aroma and flavours reminiscent of mango, grapefruit, and yes, passionfruit.  we double down on the whole passionfruit thing by overloading our fermenter with passionfruit, which gives this beer an almost overwhelmingly tropical fruit character, and a subtle, refreshing tartness.

Sometimes people ask us what does 'inspired by adventure' mean in the context of the beers we brew. From day one founders Dan and Tom Lowe have taken inspiration and their love of a broad range of beers and used this to create styles of beer we enjoy drinking. Some of our beers are based upon current global trends and some, like Eventide, come from a moment or location that drive innovation and allow us to address how we think about the beer we brew.

The seed of Eventide was planted when brewer Paul was in Copenhagen last year and had a blueberry yoghurt smoothie in a food market. Whilst the beer has evolved since its inception, the concept remains that of a creamy blueberry fruit smoothie IPA (whatever that means). We've given it a hefty spike of front-loaded bitterness to balance out the full-bodied sweetness.

We first launched Hop Tart back in the early days of Fourpure in 2015. We loved it back then (and so did many of you), so we decided to bring it back. In the intervening years we’ve grown and matured a lot as a brewery, and we like to think that the 2017 edition of Hop Tart demonstrates how far we’ve come.

This is a kettle soured session beer (no, not Berliner or a Gose, you pernickety beer writers) fermented with a Saison yeast before being dry hopped to smithereens. Dry hopped with Citra, Centennial and Cascade for a big fruity hit of hop flavour and aroma. Refreshing, lightly tart, and hoppy. Pair with; warm, sunny days and good friends.

We hand selected the coffee beans for this brew, choosing a blend that reminds us of tangerine, candied orange and cooked peach – which we figured would go nicely in a big, bold, hoppy West Coast Pale.

A simple grist supports an assertive hop profile of tropical fruit and citrus, but it all comes together because of the coffee. We added whole coffee beans directly to the tank when the beer was cold conditioning, to impart a smooth, well rounded coffee character to the beer.

This is a rustic, farmhouse beer that has been infused with gorgeously aromatic Japanese jasmine green tea. Gold in color and lightly hazy, this is a highly aromatic beer, with notes of jasmine flowers, lemon, black pepper, and herbal tea jumping from the glass. How many mornings begin with a piping hot coffee, which seemingly determines the entire outcome of your day? Mornington, our new Flat White IPA, takes inspiration from our love of coffee (shout out to our absolute trooper of a coffee machine - we love you) and a desire to draw the best attributes from the perfect flat white and put it into a beer.

Many of our adventures have taken us to places where coffee is grown; Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, to name a few, producing coffee beans as markedly different as the countries in which they are grown. With Mornington we look to our friends in the southern hemisphere, who have taken those delicious coffee beans, and turned them into something even more wonderful.

Now, we can hear some of you asking – what is a flat white? What makes a flat white a flat white? The flat white is a marvel of modern coffee. Take two shots of espresso, pour 160ml of the smoothest velvety milk imaginable over the top and you’ve got yourself a flat white my friend. The flat white has been a staple for Australian and New Zealand cafés for decades, but over the past five years, this great beverage has finally rooted itself in the British psyche; quite literally with all that caffeine.

    pc: @hannynaibaho

However, with fame comes controversy. The dispute over the origin of the flat white joins a long list of national treasures from which Australia and New Zealand wrestle over. Pavlova, Crowded House, Russell Crowe, and now the flat white. Regardless of its place of birth, there is no denying that both countries have helped make it great.

Melbourne, often regarded as the most liveable city in the world, is famous for its café culture. The question of what makes a café great can be extended to what makes a pub great. The reason is always different. There’s no golden rule and guidelines to follow. The determining factor for both these institutions is the feeling of home away from home, a place where close friends somehow become closer. Sharing your hopes, fears, struggles, and triumphs, and (most importantly) sharing a laugh. That is why the best cafés in Melbourne are ingrained in their communities, reflecting the culture and aesthetic of the kind of people who inhabit their haunts. It does also help that the coffee in Melbourne is probably the best in the world.

    pc: @bashton

As you can guess, we love coffee, but what do you do when it’s too late for a cup, but you want those roasted and citrus flavours? Have decaf? No chance. You have a beer of course! What we set out to achieve with Mornington was a rich creamy body, balanced with the roasted espresso character of a flat white. Your choice of origin for your beans will determine the flavour profile of your coffee, and a coffee in our eyes should have the perfect combination of chocolate and fruit characteristics, which is why we have chosen Union Coffee’s Natural Spirit blend. A blend of beans from Peru, Honduras and Ethiopia, this coffee gives Mornington a hit of zesty lemon and luxurious chocolate.

Lactose and five different types of malt give us a full creamy mouthfeel with a sweetness that is perfectly balanced with the coffee and hop bitterness. Mosaic and Cascade hops have been added at whirlpool and dry-hopped to extract blueberry and floral flavours, matching perfectly with our choice of coffee.

At the end of all this, you have Mornington; a beer we have created to encompass the communal culture that exists in the cafés of Melbourne and in the pubs of London.

Mornington will be available at Taproom and in crowler on our webshop on the 13th March

Imagine this. You’re on a tropical island. The hot sun beating down around you as you are protected by your trusty red-and-white beach umbrella. Closing your eyes, all you can hear is the ocean lapping up against the shore, before it retreats out to sea, and repeats the process. Your feet dig into, if not the whitest, the softest sand you have ever experienced. The most difficult part of your day? Negotiating with your mates whose round it is (there’s always one round dodger). In your hand/s, a giant coconut filled with a tropical citrusy concoction, packed with ice, a straw with eyes only for you, and its very own trusty beach umbrella.

You got that picture in your head? Great.

Now picture a trading estate in South Bermondsey, a lack of funds for flights to Tahiti, and you’re left with only one option. Bring the beach to Fourpure!

So that’s what we have done with Castaway, a beer masquerading as a tropical cocktail. Our Mai Tai Double IPA takes inspiration from the classic tiki cocktail that consists of two types of rum, lime juice, orange curacao, orgeat syrup and pineapple juice (depending on what recipes you look at).

First thing first, we had to research the Mai Tai. The original drink was invented in the 40s when the tiki craze in America was kicking off, the modern Mai Tai comes with many creative twists, we felt it important that we selflessly sacrificed some nights around London trying as many Mai Tai’s as was humanly possible.

After several long research sessions, it turns out it’s all about the citrus; built on a rum base, the orange and the lime really come to the forefront, this helped with our hop selection to create a big, boozy Double IPA. The use of Amarillo, Citra, and Denali give the beer a striking tropical aroma with hints of orange, passionfruit, and pineapple. The use of oats during the mash-in results in a more well-rounded body, with a reduced bitterness, but enough to be true to style. The addition of natural flavours of orange, lime, and almond give the final touches for this homage to the tiki classic.

So, during what’s left of this dreary winter, let Castaway transport you to the sunshine of the South Pacific. Let the sun kiss your face, the sand massage your feet, and keep the Mai Tai’s (Double IPA’s) coming!

Order Castaway on our webshop or come down for a chilled one at our taproom.

During the process of creating Castaway, our Polynesian inspired Mai Tai Double IPA, our minds wandered to the great Kon-Tiki Expedition of 1947. Wait. You don’t know the courageous tale of the Kon-Tiki? To be honest, neither did I. In fact, I thought Contiki was the bus tour company who drive drunken Australians around the world. No! Kon-Tiki was very different. Where Contiki has boat race drinking games, Kon-Tiki had a raft weathering the treacherous Pacific Ocean. Where Contiki has their drunken tour leader, Nathan, Kon-Tiki had their fearless captain, Thor Heyerdahl.

“But why did they sail the Pacific Ocean on nothing more than a raft?” I hear you say. Well, good ol’ Thor was one smart cookie. He observed that the Pacific Islands had vegetation native to South America and theorised the origins of the Pacific Islanders must have arrived from the east (South America) instead of the widely accepted west (not South America). Thor shared his thoughts with several leading anthropologists, who laughed him out the room. “Sure, see how far you get yourself sailing from Peru to the South Pacific on a balsa raft!” they taunted. If Heyerdahl needed any more motivation to prove his theory, he got it. But to prove the doubters wrong, he needed a crew.

Five trusty men and one Spanish speaking parrot were quickly assembled, all with a thirst for adventure and Heyerdahl's only requirement; unwavering courage. You would have thought it’d be sailing experience, but Thor didn’t care about that. Literally none of the crew had sailed before. As expected, many deemed the mission suicide, but Thor had faith in his crew, and they had faith in him.

On the 28th April 1947, the crew set sail from Peru on their creeky hand-made balsa raft, christened Kon-Tiki after the Peruvian sun god. It took the crew 101 days, weathering ferocious storms, meeting a whopping 30-foot whale shark, and losing their trusty parrot (who let’s be honest, was the weakest link in the crew), before they hit a reef not far from Tahiti. The expedition was a success, achieving what many believed impossible. Heyerdahl had proven his theory that people from South America could indeed have travelled across the Pacific Ocean and populated the South Pacific Islands.

“So, because of Thor everyone now believes the origins of the South Pacific people began in South America?” Well… No. Despite Heyerdahl’s courageous achievement, it is still widely believed that migration came from the west, due to other evidence. But let’s not dwell on that. What this great expedition proved was despite the doubters, if you have courage and faith in your mission, then you can achieve great things. So, while we’re sipping down a Castaway, we’ll cheers to Thor Heyerdahl and his courageous crew, who inspire us to push boundaries and relish, not fear, the unknown. Cheers!

You can see the real raft in the flesh (balsa wood) at the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo, Norway and learn more about this great adventure.
